The killing of Colonel Qaddafi is well deserved, a balm to the souls of this horrible dictator's many victims and their relatives, and was absolutely essential to end the civil war he dragged his country into. But in the celebrations we run the risk of overlooking the fact that the prospects for building a decent society in Libya are pretty grim. The recent attempt by the Libyan-born Jew David Gerbi to reopen a synagogue in Tripoli, which nearly ended with his lynching, is a harbinger of how the new regime and the corrupted society Qaddafi left behind are likely to deal with other ethnic and religious minorities. For that matter, the death of Qaddafi itself, however well deserved, bears a certain ugly resemblance to the fate of Nicolae Ceauşescu of late unlamented memory. That is, the successor regime in Libya, as in 1989 Romania, is dominated by rats from the ancien regime who jumped ship when they saw it was sinking, and doubtless wanted the dictator silenced so he could not take them down with him by exposing their own crimes in his service. The night of Qaddafi’s evil is over, but the dawn is a very gray one indeed.

Mahmoud Abbas, president of the Palestinian Authority, has just given a speech in Ramallah confirming that he intends to create yet another unnecessary crisis that will be a disaster above all for his people by going to the UN Security Council to demand unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state (and never mind that this is also a violation of the Oslo Accords leading to the creation of the Palestinian Authority itself). Note that Abbas talked about "63 years living under the occupation." That is, for him "the occupation" began in 1948, when Israel was created, and not in 1967, when Israel took over the West Bank in the war caused by Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser's threats of a war of extermination against the Jewish State. Even for the leader of the so-called Palestinian moderates, the real problem is Israel's existence and not the disposition of the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

The fact that Abbas also pretended to accept Israel's legitmacy in the same speech merely shows that he is a master of double-talk.

At about 2 p.m. EDT on September 14, the headline on the lead story of the "left-wing" Israeli daily Haaretz's online edition read, "PLO official: Palestinian state to be free of Jews." This was based on an earlier USA Today article with an almost identical headline: "PLO ambassador says Palestinian state should be free of Jews." By 4 p.m., Haaretz had evidently decided to protect its readers from the unpleasant truth, changing the headline to read: "PLO official: Palestinians, Israelis must be totally separated."

Question for the editorial board of Haaretz, which recently saw fit to write about the detention and intrusive body searches of Israelis arriving in Istanbul aboard Turkish Airlines, "Perhaps Israelis need humiliation to respect others:" Do you really think your lies will bring peace?

The Washington Post has published the complete "manifesto" of the Norwegian terrorist Anders Behring Breivik who murdered dozens of people in Oslo and on a nearby island. The decision to publish the rantings of such murderers is always a tricky one, but they do have a certain forensic value.

It is quite true that Breivik was primarily driven by hatred of Muslims and multi-culturalists. But no student of the far Right can be surprised to find anti-Semitism is a part of this murderer's disordered thought processes. Nor can anyone who knows of the irrationality of this type of hate be surprised by the fact that Breivik's anti-Semitic sentiments are found alongside hypocritical expressions of concern for Jews and Israel as victims of Muslim hatred, any more than one ought to be startled that this Muslim-hater expressed his evil rage by slaughtering mainly Norwegians of Christian background. (The following quotations preserve the imperfect English of the original:)

I support the Libya intervention for the same reason I have always supported the Iraq war--genocidal/terrorist dictators need to be stopped by any means necessary. But I have to say Obama's failure to seek any sort of Congressional sanction--while making sure to get the UN to sign off!--is really very disturbing. Who is running the U.S. military, Congress or the Security Council? Interestingly, the record now shows three Democratic presidents going to war without Congressional approval--Truman's "police action" in Korea, which tore a giant hole in the U.S. Constitution's explicit placement of the warmaking power in Congress's hands (although U.S. involvement in the Korean War was both necessary and just), LBJ in Vietnam, and now Obama in Libya. On the other hand, both Bushes sought some sort of Congressional approval for their respective wars in Iraq. So on this point, the GOP really does have a better record of respecting the Constitution!

Which does not, of course, excuse the total lack of planning in both Iraq and Libya (and the current case could end up even worse than the mess Rumsfeld & Co. made after April '03!)

Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.) is about to hold hearings into the radicalization of American Muslim communities. The battle lines have already been drawn, and the fact that King is a former supporter of the IRA who still views the Irish terrorist group with sympathy shows that he is clearly not the right person to hold hearings this sensitive. Murder is murder no matter in whose name or for what cause it is committed.

But the problem of radicalization in Muslim communities is a real one that Muslim groups and well-intentioned civil libertaraians can't make go away by screaming that it is bigotry to point it out. There is indeed a danger of McCarthyism here, but let's remember that one of the worst things the late unlamented senator from Wisconsin did was to discredit anticommunism in the eyes of liberals who were able to dismiss all such accusations as the product of demagoguery. The historian of Stalinism Robert Conquest says that Russian friends have suggested to him in all seriousness that McCarthy may have been a KGB agent! Remember, the former government official Alger Hiss was in fact a Soviet spy, but many liberals refused to believe it because it was Richard Nixon who discovered the evidence and held the hearings, and many Republicans did indeed wish to paint the entire New Deal with a pink brush. It is very dismaying to see that nobody has learned anything at all from this sorry history.
